The NY Times was my local paper, and still is. Unfortunately, I know too many people who work there to have the respect I once had for it. And since I've worked there and for numerous other newspapers, I've seen how they are made. Like sausage, the process of putting together a newspaper is something best left to those initiated into what once was a community of journalists. Now we have the Web, and more misinformation at every click. There was something to be said for "all the news that's fit to print." Alas, those days are falling faster than the remaining trees in the forest.

I grew up with the NY Times as my local paper, and I remember years of getting half the Sunday paper on Saturday night, and hours of time spent sitting on the floor turning the pages. I miss those days -- and I don't think the quality of news is anywhere near what it used to be, when people were willing to pay for it.

I've been reading my Mom's Sunday NYT now when she's done with it, and sometimes I have Michael pick me up one at the corner store now that I'm not teaching on Sunday mornings and I have time to lounge with a real paper. At $6 bucks that doesn't happen very often. I missed paper-reading though. It's not the same with M at his computer reading CNN (ugh) and me at my laptop scanning the local (double ugh) for something interesting.

We used to have two competing local dailies here in Big D. The liberal one, the Times-Herald, went under some years ago. I was surprised to learn that Las Vegas mandates two dailies, for balanced reporting. How 'bout that?

we used to get the sunday paper. just the local paper ... while I love the writing in the times - the sunday times always felt a little overwhelming. so many words, so many letters, so many pages.
the local sunday paper was easily digested, and so we got just that. until they did to us what they did to you - they started bringing us more papers. and for the same price! what a boon!
ah...but not for weese.
i didn't read that much news - which meant these extra free papers went unread. this is wasteful.
weese gets a little anxious about waste.
so we stopped the paper completely.
its ok tho, my wife now reads her news online. and i kicked my news addiction years ago.
but honestly - some sundays... i really miss it.

It's interesting that you posted this today, because just this morning I was checking my long-neglected blog links to make sure they were all still active and correct. In so doing, I found that my favorite copyediting blog (yes, I have favorite copyediting blogs), You Don't Say, previously available through The Baltimore Sun's website, had been moved to a personal URL because the blogger, John McIntyre, a copy editor at the Sun for over 20 years, had been fired. The Sun did have the good graces to link to his new online home.

The discovery made me very sad, and also made me feel very lucky to be among the last employed copy editors. I hope my luck holds out.
